Testosterone is the male sex hormone. This study is being conducted in men with type 2 diabetes, both with normal and low levels of testosterone. We have previously shown that men with type 2 diabetes have as much as a 1 in 3 chance of having low testosterone. The study will determine if there is any effect of testosterone replacement in those with low levels of testosterone. Testosterone replacement will be in the form of Androgel, a commercially available testosterone gel
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of testosterone deficiency in men with diabetes. This will be done by comparing the changes in several body response indicators following treatment with testosterone in diabetic men with low testosterone levels and comparing them to diabetic men with low testosterone who are not treated with testosterone. These groups will also be compared with diabetic men who have normal testosterone levels.
You are being asked to participate because you are a male, with type 2 diabetes, between the ages of 30–60 years and have low or normal testosterone levels
